FAQs

Who is MMSW?

Multi-Material Stewardship Western (MMSW) is a non-profit organization established to help businesses who produce residential waste packaging and paper in Saskatchewan meet their requirements under the Saskatchewan Household Packaging & Paper Stewardship Program Regulation.

What is changing in my recycling program?

The transition to a MMSW’s program model should be seamless for residents, but industry will now be responsible for funding up to 75 per cent of an efficient and effective recycling program in Saskatchewan. This reduces the financial burden on municipalities and taxpayers who contribute to recycling costs through property taxes.

Why is this change happening? What was wrong with our old program?

The Environmental Management and Protection Act, 2002 transfers responsibility for financing up to 75 per cent of efficient and effective recycling programs for residential waste packaging and paper to businesses that manufacture or supply  this material into the Saskatchewan market.

This change follows the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which transfers recycling responsibility from municipalities and taxpayers to businesses that produce the materials into market.

MMSW acts on the behalf of businesses in helping them fulfil their requirements under this new regulation.
