In 2023, MMSW continued its ongoing commitment to Saskatchewan recycling programs. Participation rates remained steady, yet average kilograms/capita decreased slightly from last year. This is the fourth year MMSW is providing an accounting of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the delivery of recycling services to residents as reported by collection partners.

2023 Highlights:

• More than 35,774 tonnes collected, resulting in a recovery rate of 64.5%.
• More than 88% of collected materials were diverted from landfills, an increase from the previous year.
• 85% of Saskatchewan households participate in the MMSW program.
• Introduction of the new ‘Household Packaging and Paper Stewardship Program Regulations, 2023’ and MMSW’s work to date to prepare for a full EPR program in Saskatchewan.
• Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with province-wide recycling activities totaled 9,271 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
