MMSW Responds to Saskatchewan Government Exemptions to Program Plan

News posted on December 18, 2014

Multi-Material Stewardship Western (MMSW) is aware of the announcement by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment (MOE) of new exemptions and capped fees for businesses obligated by its Household Packaging and Paper Stewardship Program Regulations (Read the announcement here and accompanying fact sheet).

Today’s announcement presents significant economic and operational challenges to MMSW’s Waste Packaging and Paper Program, which was to launch on January 1, 2015. While the full extent and nature of these challenges will not be known until a full review and examination has taken place, MMSW can confirm that the implications of today’s announcement are serious and prevents a January 1, 2015 launch.

Allen Langdon, Managing Director of MMSW, said: “Today’s announcement of exemptions and capped fees, changing a program already approved by the government a year ago, has come as a surprise to our organization. These exemptions will have very serious impacts on the operation of this program, and on the funding of the program by businesses. While we examine the full extent of these impacts, we have no choice but to halt the launch of the program indefinitely.”

MMSW will release further communications once it has completed its review and evaluation.
